Global online education platforms Coursera and Udemy have officially completed their merger. Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng confirmed the news today, announcing he will serve as chairman of the newly combined company.
The acquisition, which began last year, has now closed. Udemy will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Coursera. Facing the threat of AI tools diverting learners from traditional education, the new company aims to build a moat by merging their content libraries — combining Coursera's academically oriented courses with Udemy's practical skills training to cover a wider range of professional development needs.
The combined company will operate under the Coursera brand and retain its New York Stock Exchange ticker COUR. Former Coursera CEO Greg Hart will continue as CEO. The board will include nine seats: six from Coursera and three from Udemy. Ng emphasized that AI is rapidly changing the nature of work, and the merged platform will lower barriers to learning while delivering more scalable and personalized experiences.
