arXiv goes independent, ending 25-year run at Cornell

The preprint server where nearly every world-changing AI paper drops first is finally moving out of its dorm room. arXiv, the default launchpad for breakthroughs like GPT and Claude, is officially spinning off from Cornell University after a 25-year hosting arrangement to become its own standalone nonprofit.

When the platform first went live in 1991, it ran on an old computer tucked under its founder's desk, processing a modest 10 papers a month. Today, arXiv absorbs over 24,000 submissions monthly and its archive has swollen past 3 million papers. That explosive growth eventually strained the university-hosted model, pushing the need for independence.

The split was backed by key funders including the Simons Foundation and Cornell itself. Going forward, arXiv will be governed by a newly hired independent CEO and an international board, freeing it to accelerate a full cloud migration and broaden its fundraising beyond traditional academic channels.
