According to Bloomberg, Ant Group is internally testing a major overhaul of Alipay that introduces an AI agent interface called 'Abao'. Once authorized, users can ask Abao to hail a ride-hailing car, order coffee, get food delivery, or even buy mutual funds — all via text or voice commands.
The new Alipay aims to break free from the traditional menu-and-search-bar model. Beyond ride-hailing and delivery, the AI agent can generate financial analysis based on a user's personal income and spending data, and offer investment advice. Tencent is also testing a similar AI agent prototype within WeChat. Both Alipay and WeChat have over 1 billion users each.
Ant Group's Q4 2025 profit plunged 79% year-over-year, driven by increased spending on healthcare applications and large language model development. The AI overhaul of Alipay is still in internal testing, and a representative for Ant Group declined to comment.
