Tesla's China voice assistant just cleared a key regulatory step.

Shanghai's cyberspace authority announced that Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.'s vehicle voice large-model service completed its generative AI service filing on April 20 — the kind of filing Chinese regulators require before AI products can ship.

The plan was already outlined in Tesla China's voice assistant terms of use: the Model Y L will get both Doubao and DeepSeek models, integrated via Volcano Engine's encrypted API. Doubao handles the command side of things, covering navigation setup, media playback, climate control, and owner's manual lookups. DeepSeek handles the conversational heavy lifting, like chitchat, news, and weather queries.

The filing means the compliance path is cleared, though the finer rollout details are still to be determined.
