DeepSeek Poaches ByteDance Product R&D Talent as It Pushes Commercialization

According to The Information, DeepSeek has been hiring from ByteDance's product R&D teams and other Chinese tech companies to accelerate its commercialization push.

Much of the previous narrative focused on DeepSeek's core researchers being poached by big companies with higher salaries, but the reverse flow also exists. According to The Paper (澎湃新闻), Xu Mingyu, a member of ByteDance's Seed team, has joined DeepSeek's model architecture group, and DeepSeek's first employee, Li Yukun, came from ByteDance's search team in 2023. However, those were research and technical positions. This time, hiring from product R&D teams signals that DeepSeek is trying to build its productization capabilities — turning models into actual products.
