Someone at SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) apparently hit the wrong button, because the company's upcoming desktop coding agent just showed up early on the web. A test entry for Grok Build briefly appeared on the Grok web interface today, letting users toggle between local folders and Google Drive. That's a tool aimed squarely at Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.
Early testers say Grok Build is coming to macOS, Linux, and Windows — and it's not your typical chat-first assistant. Instead, it runs on an agent workflow that can autonomously execute multi-step development tasks. And it ships with surprisingly deep local permissions:
- Full extension ecosystem: supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), official Skills, and various plugins.
- Deep local control: reads Git trees, manages files and folders, and can even spin up a dev server on its own.
- Independent task planning: includes a built-in browser for web research and a dedicated "planning mode" for complex, multi-step jobs.
If it doesn't launch with a new model, Grok Build will default to the recently released Grok 4.3 Early Access — which testers say is particularly good at generating front-end code.
