OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman admitted that the new model from Moon's Dark Side (known by its English name Moonshot AI), Kimi K3, is "pretty good." But he said it's too early to tell whether Kimi achieved its capabilities by distilling OpenAI models — a technique where a smaller model learns from a larger one's outputs. OpenAI will keep monitoring.
Earlier, White House officials accused Moonshot AI of improperly using US AI models. Anthropic has raised similar concerns. Moonshot AI has not responded.
Brockman also cited estimates that Chinese models may be only four months behind American ones. He argued that the future of competition isn't about whether models are open source, but who can accomplish tasks at lower cost.
