OpenAI Codex's anti-abuse system went rogue, gobbling up users' token quotas at an alarming rate — prompting the company to hit the reset button for everyone.
Tibo Sottiaux, OpenAI's core product lead for Codex, said an anti-fraud and anti-abuse mechanism misfired, causing users to burn through their usage limits far faster than normal. The company has now reset all Codex users' quotas for free.
The problem started around June 16th and exploded on social media by June 25th. Hundreds of developers reported on GitHub and social platforms that Codex's token consumption had spiked wildly. Some accounts saw their quota drain 10 to 20 times faster than usual. Subscribers on the $200 tier found their credits vanishing in days instead of weeks.
