A peculiar side hustle has emerged on Chinese resale platform Xianyu: paid skin services for the Codex desktop app. For a few yuan, you can buy a tutorial; custom designs typically run between 66 and 99 yuan. Sellers swap out backgrounds, sidebars, buttons, and avatars, churning out themes featuring celebrities, games, and anime characters.
The underlying tool is already free and open-source on GitHub. Called Codex Dream Skin, it supports macOS and Windows, injects themes via native CDP without modifying the official installer, and offers one-click restore. The project has racked up roughly 6,800 stars.
Some mock this as a pure information-arbitrage business. Others argue that buyers are paying for design, installation, and convenience — not just the code.
