OpenAI and Anthropic are raising $5.5 billion to acquire AI deployment teams

OpenAI and Anthropic are each forming joint ventures with private equity firms to buy engineering and consulting companies that help clients deploy AI. A new OpenAI entity called The Deployment Company is raising roughly $4 billion from investors, with three acquisitions already in advanced stages. The joint venture is expected to be announced this week. Anthropic, meanwhile, is raising around $1.5 billion for a similar effort.

Both companies plan to absorb hundreds of engineers and consultants through these acquisitions, who will work directly with enterprise clients to adapt AI models to specific business data and workflows. This moves the battlefield for market share from pure model research to the labor-intensive work of enterprise deployment.

Blackstone Group President Jon Gray said bringing in highly skilled implementation partners can break the biggest bottleneck to enterprise AI adoption. The strategy mirrors that of Palantir, which embeds engineers inside client organizations to deploy and tune systems.
