Musk and Vance spar over how to handle AI wealth distribution

US Vice President JD Vance told the CEO Diary podcast that Trump supports creating a sovereign wealth fund to take equity stakes in frontier AI companies. Vance argues that letting large language model startups grow into trillion-dollar, unchecked monopolies would only make the rich richer and turn everyone else into dependents. His solution: government ownership combined with a "predistribution" mechanism — modeled after collective bargaining — that gives workers a seat at the table from the start, sharing in the technological windfall rather than relying on redistribution after the fact.

Elon Musk fired back on X, proposing a simpler alternative: have the Treasury mail checks directly to citizens. Musk contends that with AI and robotics supercharging output far faster than money supply, direct payments won't trigger inflation — instead, the real battle will be against massive deflation.

The core divide comes down to how to prevent runaway inequality. Vance wants to intervene at the production stage, using state ownership and labor leverage to keep asset gains from being cornered by a few. Musk prefers a monetary fix: keep government out of owning the means of production and just use the resulting abundance to put cash in people's hands.
