US brings Musk, Altman, and Huang to sell G20 on light-touch AI

The US is taking its hands-off AI agenda to the G20 — and it's bringing the industry's biggest names along.

Elon Musk, David Sacks, Sam Altman, and Jensen Huang are all slated to appear at next week's G20 innovation ministers meeting, where the US will pitch other countries on a light-touch approach to AI regulation. The meeting runs September 1-2 in North Carolina, with tech and trade officials from more than 20 countries expected. Bloomberg reports that Musk and Sacks will speak virtually on day one, while Altman and Huang take the stage day two.

The US wants G20 members to sign on to a looser regulatory framework: avoid creating dedicated new regulators, stick with existing industry oversight, and let governments and companies test emerging tech like AI together. That framework, called the 'Carolina Principles,' is non-binding. If member nations reach a consensus, the principles would be folded into a joint statement and passed along to the G20 leaders' summit in December.

In effect, this is the Trump administration's domestic AI policy, international edition. Back in March, the White House said it wouldn't create a federal AI rule-making body, instead deferring to existing industry regulators and standards while cutting regulation that slows AI deployment. Now it's trying to push the same playbook to the G20.
