Mistral Just Welcomed China's GLM-5.2 Into Its 'Sovereign AI' Club

Mistral has spent a long time championing "European sovereign AI." So here's a twist: it just brought a Chinese model into its own platform. Mistral announced it's now hosting third-party open models, starting with GLM-5.2 from Zhipu's Z.ai. The model runs directly on Mistral's infrastructure, with the same regional controls and service guarantees as Mistral's own models.

The community had already been teasing Mistral about DeepSeek. After Mistral Large 3 shipped, researchers picked apart its configuration and found it basically uses the same architecture as DeepSeek V3/V3.1, with tweaks to expert routing and other details.

This time, Mistral has gone all-in: it's openly plugging a Chinese model into its "sovereign AI" system. Some in the community are already joking that European sovereign AI teams no longer need to rebrand Chinese models — they can just point them at a European server.

Mistral has essentially redefined "sovereign AI": the model doesn't need to be trained by a European company. What matters is that enterprises can pick their own model and control where it runs, where the data stays, and who holds the compute.

So a Chinese model running on European infrastructure? In Mistral's book, that still counts as "European sovereign AI."
