Andrej Karpathy — the OpenAI co-founder who just joined Anthropic last month — is already singing the praises of Anthropic’s new Fable 5 model. He called it a true generational leap, especially for long and gnarly debugging tasks. The model, he says, can take a big development goal, quickly understand what you’re going for, and run with it. In fact, it’s the first time he’s felt the strong urge to just not look at the code at all. But, he warns, don’t actually do that in production.

Karpathy also invoked the Jevons paradox: if software suddenly starts flowing like water from a tap, developers’ appetites will grow exponentially. That could lead to a boom in hyper-specific, single-use tools and massive test suites. On the flip side, he noted that the model’s safety guardrails are still too sensitive out of the gate and need tuning.
