Clint Gibler, formerly head of security research at code analysis tool Semgrep, has announced he's joining OpenAI to co-lead cybersecurity efforts with Michael Aiello.

Gibler notes that AI is fundamentally reshaping how software is written and secured. Programming agents now generate the majority of development code, cutting delivery cycles — but also accelerating the speed at which vulnerabilities can be discovered and exploited. Defenders can no longer rely on piecemeal patches, he argues; they need to automatically generate secure code, streamline detection and verification, and systematically eliminate entire classes of bugs.
OpenAI has already poured millions into finding and fixing vulnerabilities in major open source software — including browsers, operating systems, and core libraries — with more details on protecting critical infrastructure to come. The new team will focus on large-scale vulnerability discovery and automated remediation, delivering secure, reliable enterprise-grade agents, and giving all security practitioners access to top-tier cybersecurity models.
