Former OpenAI alignment researcher Naomi Bashkansky is done keeping AI aligned — now she wants to teach it to read your mind.
Bashkansky has joined Conduit, a brain-computer interface startup, as a founding researcher. The company is building a non-invasive "mind-reading AI": a headset that picks up brain signals and turns thoughts into text.
Conduit says it's collected roughly 10,000 hours of brain-signal and language data. Participants wear the device while chatting or typing with an AI, so the model can learn how brain activity maps to language.
Don't expect word-for-word telepathy yet. Right now the system can only guess at general meaning. Think "the room feels colder," and the AI might hear "there's a breeze." Close enough... if you're not picky about accuracy.
Bashkansky compares the technology to the GPT-2 stage — early and rough, but a sign of things to come. In a few years, she thinks, humans could control AI directly with their thoughts.
