Sakana AI’s Self-Aware Bricks Detect Their Own Damage Without a Central Brain

Japanese AI startup Sakana AI has built a set of “self-aware” smart bricks. Nearly 200 bricks snap together into shapes like an airplane, table, or guitar. Each brick only talks to its immediate neighbors, yet together they can figure out what the whole structure looks like.

When researchers yank or disable some bricks, the remaining ones can still sense where the break happened and continue to recognize the overall shape. No cameras, no positional data, and no central computer calling the shots.

Think of them as physical cells: a single cell can’t see the whole body, but by passing signals between neighbors, the entire tissue knows its form and where it’s been damaged.

The team envisions this tech eventually used in buildings, robots, or spacecraft. Structures could flag faults themselves instead of waiting for manual inspection — and even if parts go down, the whole system doesn’t immediately fall apart.
