Anthropic's AI assistant Claude has sparked a privacy discussion after users noticed its login verification emails include a rough location — things like country, region, or city. It's a small detail that suddenly makes you wonder how AI services identify where you're coming from.
The location isn't GPS-accurate; it's inferred from your IP address, network connection, and device info. If you're using a VPN, proxy, corporate network, or mobile carrier, the email might show a completely different spot than where you actually are. Anthropic's privacy policy says it collects IP addresses, device info, connection data, and IP-inferred location for security, fraud prevention, and enforcing terms of service.
Claude users are especially sensitive to this. The service isn't available everywhere, so cross-border usage, overseas accounts, and third-party relay services are common in Chinese-speaking communities. Lately, there have been reports of accounts being suspended or forced to re-verify — what some are calling a "ban wave."
