Anthropic announced on April 14 that it's introducing a new "routines" feature for Claude Code—a web-based automation service that lets developers schedule and trigger tasks in the cloud.
Developers can package code repositories and connector tasks, set schedules or trigger conditions, and have them run on Anthropic's infrastructure. The key benefit: tasks execute in the cloud, so even if your Mac is offline, scheduled jobs will still complete on time.

Research Preview for Automated Workflows
The feature is launching as a research preview, targeting use cases like scheduled tasks, API workflows, and GitHub automation. It aims to address the pain points developers face when manually managing cron jobs and server infrastructure.
Cron jobs are a common tool in Unix-like systems for scheduling recurring tasks. Traditionally, developers have had to write scripts and configure server environments themselves.
Subscription Tiers and Limits
- Pro users: Can run up to 5 routines per day.
- Max users: Limit of 15 routines daily.
- Team and Enterprise users: Can run up to 25 routines each day.
Redesigned Claude Code Mac Client
Alongside routines, Anthropic also released a redesigned Claude Code Mac client. The new version introduces parallel sessions, allowing users to run multiple Claude conversations side-by-side in a single window, managed through a new sidebar.

Key Features of the Redesigned Client
The updated client integrates several tools into one interface:
- Terminal and file editor: Built-in command-line and code editing.
- HTML and PDF preview panels: View web pages and documents directly.
- Faster diff viewer: Review code changes quickly and add line-level comments for Claude to address.
- Drag-and-drop layout: Arrange workspace panels to fit your workflow.
- CLI plugin compatibility: Plugins installed in the terminal work seamlessly in the desktop app.
A Shift in Interface Philosophy
The core changes represent a significant shift from the previous conversation-focused interface:
- Multiple Claude sessions can run simultaneously in one window, with a new sidebar to manage them all.
- Integrated tools—terminal, editor, preview panels—all support drag-and-drop arrangement.
- Full CLI plugin compatibility means terminal plugins work directly in the desktop app.
- A faster diff viewer lets you comment on specific lines of code and ask Claude to make changes.
User Experience Considerations
While the new interface offers more integrated tools, some developers accustomed to terminal workflows might find it overly complex. The move from a simple chat interface to a multi-panel workspace could feel less intuitive for those who prefer direct conversation with Claude.
For power users who live in the terminal, this graphical interface might seem unnecessary—adding layers where simplicity once ruled. What appears user-friendly on the surface could actually create a steeper learning curve for developers who just want to talk to Claude and get things done.
