Anthropic is building its own AI chips — and Samsung might make them

According to The Information, Anthropic has started early work on its own AI chips and is in talks with Samsung Electronics about using its 2-nanometer manufacturing process and advanced packaging services. The goal is to reduce the physical distance between the processor and high-bandwidth memory to improve data transfer efficiency, sources say.

To push the project forward, Anthropic recently poached Clive Chan, an early member of OpenAI's in-house chip team. OpenAI has already designed its first inference chip with Broadcom. With computing costs remaining high, top large language model companies are accelerating their move to build their own hardware.

For now, chip development is still in early planning — not yet in detailed design or testing. Anthropic says Amazon's Trainium, Google's TPU, and Nvidia's GPU remain central to its compute strategy. For Samsung, landing this deal could be a key breakthrough for its 2nm foundry business to compete with TSMC.
