Anthropic Could Raise Billions at $800B Valuation, But It's Not Biting

In Silicon Valley, top-tier VCs are always chasing the hottest deals, but startups aren't always eager to give up equity. According to sources, AI giant Anthropic—OpenAI's chief rival—is currently in that enviable position of being pursued, not pursuing.

Multiple venture firms have recently approached Anthropic with offers to kick off a new funding round. The potential deal values the company at a staggering $800 billion or more, a figure that puts it nearly on par with its archrival OpenAI. For comparison, OpenAI closed a record-breaking round in March at an $852 billion valuation, while Anthropic's last official funding announcement in February pegged its value at $380 billion.

Surprisingly, despite the chance to double its valuation overnight, Anthropic has remained remarkably cool, showing no clear interest so far. Of course, that stance isn't set in stone. AI development is a notoriously cash-burning black hole. In just the past few months, the company behind the Claude model has committed $50 billion to build its own data centers and plans to spend tens of billions more on cloud services from Microsoft and Amazon.

The frenzy from investors is driven by Anthropic's explosive financial performance. Data shows that by the end of March, its annualized revenue had skyrocketed to $30 billion, up from just $9 billion at the end of last year. This leapfrog growth has convinced backers that "this money is worth investing," and even on the secondary market, Anthropic shares have become scarce.

Right now, all it would take is a nod from CEO Dario Amodei for Anthropic to secure a massive cash infusion that could push its valuation past OpenAI's. But for now, Anthropic seems to believe that leveraging its current revenue scale and technological lead puts it in a stronger bargaining position than diluting equity for short-term cash.
