The giant AI model companies are now directly harvesting the most upstream part of the AI ecosystem. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in his role as former Y Combinator president, announced at a YC event that he'd give every startup in the current batch $2 million worth of OpenAI API tokens — in exchange for equity.

This blanket investment is being compared to Yuri Milner's universal investment in 2011, and it's shaking up the venture capital world. For YC, it means startups don't have to burn precious $500,000 cash on API bills. That effectively raises their survival rate, which makes YC's early equity more valuable.
But underneath the win-win veneer, this is OpenAI making a land grab on early-stage VCs. OpenAI is using its compute hegemony — exchanging near-zero marginal cost virtual tokens for scarce, high-quality startup equity. As compute becomes a de facto currency, this 'token seigniorage' not only reduces startups' need for cash from traditional VCs, but also physically blocks Anthropic or open-source ecosystems from spreading through the next generation of software.
