The US government's export control order against Anthropic didn't quite slam the door shut. Cybersecurity firm Dragos and networking giant Cisco have confirmed they still have access to the company's most powerful security model, the Mythos preview.
The Mythos preview has been a standout in vulnerability detection, capable of unearthing thousands of security flaws across major operating systems and browsers. To prevent misuse, Anthropic restricted access to the model in April to members of Project Glasswing, a coalition of roughly 200 organizations including banks and tech companies. As a substitute, Anthropic released Fable 5 to the public, but stripped it of cybersecurity execution capabilities.
Then came the export license review. The US government ordered Anthropic to lock down both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to prevent unauthorized foreign nationals from using them. Anthropic promptly shut down public access to Fable 5 and paused Mythos 5 deployments to Project Glasswing members. But the government's directive never mentioned the Mythos preview. In a blog post, Anthropic said "the remaining models" are unaffected — without directly referencing the preview version.
