Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s AGI deployment CEO, is leaving her full-time position to become a part-time advisor. She went on medical leave three months ago after a flare-up of a chronic illness, and now says her recovery is taking longer than expected, requiring her to focus on treatment.

Simo was OpenAI’s second-highest-ranking executive after Sam Altman. Previously, she was CEO of Instacart and oversaw the Facebook app. She joined OpenAI in 2025, leading product and business teams across ChatGPT, Codex, and other projects, before being named CEO of AGI deployment.
In April, Simo went on leave for a neuroimmune disorder, initially expecting to be out for just a few weeks. Since then, OpenAI president Greg Brockman has taken over her product duties. Her remaining product and business responsibilities are expected to be split among Brockman, CFO Sarah Friar, and chief strategy officer Jason Kwon.
Simo says she has been living with the chronic condition for seven years and that there is no cure. In addition to continuing as an advisor to OpenAI, she plans to work on AI-driven biomedical projects, including Chronicle BioAI and CODA Research.
