OpenAI is pulling the plug on its Atlas browser, barely a year after launch. The standalone browser will stop working on August 9, and its core capabilities are being absorbed into ChatGPT and Codex.
The new ChatGPT desktop app already includes a built-in browser with support for multiple tabs, file downloads, website logins, and direct web interaction via agents. Users can also access browser features through a Chrome extension.
Atlas bookmarks, tabs, and browsing history won't be automatically migrated. Users need to manually export bookmarks and save important pages before the shutdown.
OpenAI previously offered ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas as separate products. Now they're being consolidated into a single desktop app, and Atlas becomes the first standalone product to be discontinued.
