OpenAI is expanding its partnership with AWS, bringing its latest models — including GPT-5.5 — along with the Codex programming tool and Managed Agents to Amazon Bedrock. The offerings are available now in limited preview.

What does this mean for enterprise customers? Until now, accessing OpenAI models effectively meant going through Azure. Companies that had bet heavily on AWS faced a painful choice: migrate infrastructure or forgo OpenAI. That barrier just disappeared. Now businesses can call OpenAI models directly from their familiar AWS environment, reusing existing security policies, compliance workflows, and billing systems. Even Codex usage can count toward AWS committed spend.
Codex's AWS debut is also notable. Companies simply configure Bedrock as the model provider within Codex — it works across CLI, desktop, and the VS Code extension. OpenAI reports that Codex now has over 4 million weekly active users, and its use has expanded well beyond coding into research analysis, document processing, and even making slides.
Then there's Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents. In short, it lets enterprises deploy OpenAI-powered agents on AWS that can maintain context, execute multi-step tasks, and call tools. AWS handles the underlying orchestration, governance, and security compliance; companies just need to worry about what the agent should do.
(Note: Bedrock is AWS's platform for hosting large language models. It already includes Anthropic's Claude and Meta's Llama, among others. OpenAI's arrival means Bedrock now offers virtually every major frontier model — giving AWS a stronger hand in the cloud AI battle with Azure.)
