OpenAI brings ChatGPT directly into Google Sheets

OpenAI has turned ChatGPT into a Google Sheets plugin, letting you build, edit, and analyze spreadsheets using plain English.

Back in March, OpenAI first released a ChatGPT for Excel beta, promising a Google Sheets version was coming. That promise is now fulfilled. Users can install it directly from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

It works exactly how you'd hope: open a blank sheet, tell ChatGPT in natural language what you want to do, and it'll build tables, fill in data, write formulas, and run analysis. The official examples range from wedding planning to coffee shop business plans to financial forecasting—the core pitch is simple: "No formulas to learn, just speak human."

Anthropic already has Claude for Excel, while OpenAI is covering both Excel and Google Sheets ecosystems. Google's own Gemini is also deeply integrating AI capabilities into Workspace. The battlefield for these three is shifting from chat windows to productivity tools—whoever stakes a claim in users' daily workflows builds the deeper moat.

For regular users, using AI in spreadsheets used to mean either installing third‑party plugins (like GPT for Sheets) or constantly copying and pasting between ChatGPT and your sheet. Now that the official plugin is here, the experience and stability should be noticeably better. Currently, the ChatGPT for Excel beta is available to Business, Enterprise, Edu, Pro, and Plus users. The exact subscription requirements for the Google Sheets version haven't been clearly announced yet—if you're curious, head to the Marketplace page to see if your account has permission to install it.
