Kimi's English-Only Apology Sparks Developer Exodus, Plugin Abandoned

An open-source developer has permanently stopped updating his popular adapter plugin for Kimi Code Plan, after Moonshot AI's service wrongfully banned his account and then only apologized in English to overseas users.

The trouble started when developer Leechael created pi-provider-kimi-code, an adapter that let paying users of the terminal agent tool Pi Coding Agent reuse their Kimi Code subscription from the command line. Pi didn't officially support Kimi at the time, so Leechael wrote the integration himself. Shortly after releasing it, Kimi Code Plan banned his account.

Meanwhile, overseas developer Noemi reported a similar ban after running Kimi Code inside a Docker container with Pi for two days, posting a 403 forbidden screenshot and demanding answers from Moonshot AI.

On the afternoon of May 26, the situation took a dramatic turn. Kimi Code team member Young replied to Noemi on X (formerly Twitter) — in English only — saying, "We immediately adjusted our strategy and restored normal access to the affected accounts. 🫡" The banned accounts were restored.

But that only made things worse. The apology and unban announcement were exclusively in English, posted only on X, and only directed at the overseas developer. Chinese developers who had been protesting on Chinese platforms got no response at all — not even to refund requests. That double standard infuriated paying users back home.

Leechael then posted a screenshot of his plugin's README, announcing an indefinite halt to development. In English, he listed three reasons: the wrongful ban, the lack of any explanation or apology after unbanning, and the platform's "Discriminatory treatment of Chinese users" — including stricter enforcement, opaque risk control, and no channel for appeals. "No merger requests, no new releases," he wrote. "Building on a platform that bans first and refuses to explain later has no long-term value."
