Karpathy joins Anthropic to avoid AI intuition drift

Andrej Karpathy is heading back to the front lines of AI research. The former Tesla Autopilot chief and OpenAI co-founder announced on X that he has joined Anthropic, nearly a year and a half after leaving OpenAI last February.

This move was not without warning. In a March 20 episode of the No Priors podcast, Karpathy admitted feeling nervous about being outside a frontier lab, because closed-source giants are building black-box walls that cause external researchers' intuition and judgment to drift.

He revealed a deep distrust of being controlled by a single closed-source entity and a natural suspicion of centralized power. His reasoning is simple: he does not want the world's intelligence to be monopolized by two or three companies behind closed doors. In the podcast, Karpathy described an ideal "secondment" — working at a frontier lab for a while to stay connected to the latest technology without losing independence. Joining Anthropic now fulfills that vision.
