AI coding tools are blurring the lines between programmers, designers, and product managers faster than anyone expected.

Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, says the future of product development will be reorganized around five distinct roles:
- Prototyper — responsible for validating ideas through prototyping
- Builder — turns concepts into working code
- Sweeper — cleans up interfaces and simplifies code
- Grower — iterates and optimizes for product-market fit
- Maintainer — keeps systems secure and scalable
Cherny’s own team at Anthropic is already running an unshackled mixed-team model where job titles don’t constrain what people do. Team members freely cross functional boundaries.
At different stages of a product’s lifecycle, the mix of these roles can make or break a project. Early, unformed products need the team to focus heavily on prototyping, building, and sweeping. Once a product matures, the center of gravity shifts toward growing and maintaining.
The new division shatters traditional silos. Inside Anthropic, for example, some designers are now directly writing code to clean up the UI, while some engineers focus entirely on generating fresh ideas.
