The US Commerce Department is closing in on a deal with Anthropic that would lift export restrictions on the company's two flagship AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. After weeks of negotiations, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly satisfied that safety concerns have been adequately addressed and is pushing to remove the ban.
Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown has taken the lead in direct lobbying, recently meeting with Lutnick and other senior officials. The US government has indicated it will lift the export restrictions as long as the models meet security standards. Meanwhile, CEO Dario Amodei has deliberately stayed out of the talks to avoid creating friction.
