Outside observers often compare Anthropic to a modern-day Manhattan Project and its founder to the 'Oppenheimer of AI.' But CEO Dario Amodei publicly rejects that analogy. He argues that in the history of technological safety oversight, Oppenheimer is a classic 'failure case' — a scientist who tried to steer events from the center of the storm, relying on his charisma, only to lose control of the technology entirely.
Amodei sees himself more in the mold of physicist Leo Szilard. Szilard first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction, then stepped back to focus on public warnings and technical limits. Amodei insists that a safe AI future can't depend on celebrity leaders — it requires institutional checks and balances at every level.
As a longtime student of nuclear history, Amodei lists The Making of the Atomic Bomb as his favorite book. He believes AI development is on a smooth exponential curve similar to the chain reaction, and that humanity must put mandatory testing regimes — like aviation safety audits — in place before the technology really explodes. Personal morality isn't enough.
