Alibaba today announced that its Qwen large language model is now fully integrated with Taobao. You can open the Qwen app and shop Taobao through conversation; the Taobao app also gets a new "Qwen AI Shopping Assistant."
The integration taps directly into Taobao's 4 billion product database and real shopping data. The idea is to use the LLM to solve the pain points of traditional search-based shopping. Remember the last time you had to filter by multiple parameters — size, color, price, brand — and bounce between pages to compare? Now you just say what you want, and the AI spits out products that meet all conditions at once.
Beyond conversational browsing, the assistant packs several automation features:
- One-sentence execution: Place orders, join flash sales, or initiate returns with a single command.
- External find similar: Send an image, video, or link from another site, and it locates the same item on Taobao.
- AI try-on: Mix and match tops and bottoms to see how they look together, with style recommendations.
- Pricing wizard: Untangle complex promotional rules — one tap generates the optimal coupon and bundle strategy.
The move comes as e-commerce giants race to embed AI agents — Meta is building a similar shopping assistant for Instagram.
