AI startup Tessera Labs raises a16z round to automate SAP migrations

AI system integration startup Tessera Labs has raised a Series A round led by a16z, with a pitch that sounds almost too good to be true: a six-person team doing the work of 60 SAP consultants.

The company, founded in 2024, uses a multi-agent platform to handle ERP migrations — starting with the massive upgrade from SAP ECC to S/4HANA.

Founder Kabir Nagrecha fits the wunderkind mold: he entered UC San Diego at 13, earned a computer science degree at 17, and finished his PhD by 20. Before starting Tessera, he did research at Meta. a16z says his PhD advisor called him "the strongest graduate student I have ever supervised." In just 18 months, the company has signed several multi-million-dollar annual contracts and grown to over 30 employees.

The timing is no accident. SAP will end standard support for ECC in 2027, leaving roughly 10,000 ECC environments worldwide that need to migrate within three years. Large SAP migrations typically take three to five years and cost between $100 million and $500 million. About 70% of major transformation projects fail to meet expectations. Nagrecha claims Tessera's agent system can analyze a client's ECC environment line by line, automatically classifying each component as keep, replace, or retire, then generating S/4HANA code, testing data migration, and orchestrating the cutover. The result: a six-person team can accomplish what previously required 60 consultants working for two years.

Tessera differentiates itself from other AI tools that simply add autocomplete for consultants. Instead, the agents do the actual work, and the company charges based on outcomes. Nagrecha argues that traditional system integrators like Accenture and Deloitte built their entire business model on billable hours. Moving to software-based delivery would shrink revenue per migration by an order of magnitude — a classic innovator's dilemma.
