150 PRs a Day From His Phone: Coding Is Solved, Says Claude Code's Creator

Claude Code's creator, Anthropic engineer Boris Cherny, declared at Sequoia Capital's AI Ascent 2026 conference that, at least for the systems he builds day-to-day, programming is a solved problem. He hasn't handwritten a line of code since last October. Instead, he runs dozens of persistent AI agents from his phone, submitting code changes — with a personal best of 150 pull requests in a single day.

Cherny attributes Claude Code's breakout to a "product ahead of its time" strategy: in late 2024, the team deliberately built the tool for a next-generation model that hadn't launched yet. For the first six months, the product was nearly unusable — until Opus 4 dropped and the capabilities finally aligned. Growth then exploded exponentially. Today, Claude Code accounts for 4% of all commits on public GitHub, and analyst firm Semi Analysis predicts that share will reach 20% by the end of the year.

Cherny also predicts that the job title "software engineer" will start to vanish by year's end, replaced by the more generic "Builder." On his own team, product managers, designers, finance leads, and data scientists all write code. The specialization hasn't changed, but coding has become a universal skill. He also let slip that Claude 4.7 can now automatically initiate an agent loop when it detects data changes, and it pushes results to Slack via MCP.
