The White House hit Anthropic's flagship model, Mythos, with emergency export controls last Friday — and the real reason isn't just about keeping the tech out of China. According to Semafor, citing people familiar with the matter, officials suspect a group with ties to China may have already gotten access to the model.
Mythos has been under extraordinarily tight restrictions since its release in April. It's only available to a handful of enterprise partners, with strict controls meant to patch security holes and keep it out of hackers' hands. But here's the catch: the model can autonomously discover and exploit code vulnerabilities. US officials have labeled it a "cyber weapon-grade" threat.
Now the fear is that if the Chinese government gets ahold of Mythos, it could have devastating consequences. The White House isn't taking chances.
