Stanford Economist Chad Jones Is Taking a Leave to Join Anthropic's New Research Institute

Stanford Graduate School of Business economist and macro thought leader Charles "Chad" I. Jones has announced he'll step away from the university starting June 30, 2026, to join Anthropic's freshly minted research arm, the Anthropic Institute.

At the institute, Jones will keep digging into the intersection of artificial intelligence and the future of human economics — running seminars, publishing papers, the usual academic routine. He's a heavyweight in growth theory, author of textbooks like Introduction to Economic Growth and Macroeconomics, and lately his attention has shifted to how AI might reshape economic growth and even pose existential risks.

The Anthropic Institute launched this March under the leadership of Anthropic co-founder and head of public benefit Jack Clark. Its mission: tackle the systemic challenges frontier AI poses to society, law, and economics. Before Jones, the institute had already poached University of Virginia economist Anton Korinek (economic research team), ex-Princeton professor and former DeepMind research director Matt Botvinick (now a Yale Law resident fellow, leading AI and law research), and former OpenAI social and economic impact researcher Zoë Hitzig.
