SpaceX officially backs open-weight AI letter as Anthropic holds out

SpaceX has officially signed on to an open letter urging the US government to take a light-touch approach to regulating open-weight AI models. The letter, titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," now boasts 77 signatories — up from 25 when it was first published. Notably absent remains Anthropic, the AI safety company co-founded by former OpenAI employees.

Elon Musk previously signaled support by reposting Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's endorsement with the caption "Fully support, Jensen is right," but SpaceX wasn't listed at the time. Now, the rocket company's name appears on the roster.

The letter asks lawmakers not to prematurely restrict downloadable, self-hosted open-weight models, and to distinguish legitimate distillation from unauthorized extraction.

Anthropic still hasn't signed.
