SK Hynix's $430K Bonuses Make Chip Engineers Korea's Hottest Dates

The AI chip boom is reshaping South Korea's social hierarchy, and SK Hynix employees are at the center of it. The memory chip maker posted record operating profit of 47.2 trillion won in 2025, and under a new bonus system that caps profit-sharing at 10% of operating profit over 10 years, an employee earning 100 million won in base salary can receive 148.2 million won in bonuses this year. With Q1 2025 net profit already at 40.3 trillion won, Cybernews estimates the average annual bonus per employee could reach 600 million won — about $430,000. For context, the average monthly salary in Seoul is around 4.3 million won ($3,000).

This windfall has triggered a cascade of social effects:

  • Korean matchmaking agencies report that SK Hynix staff are now ranked alongside doctors and lawyers in desirability. On the anonymous workplace app Blind, employees report a surge in blind date requests. One joke: married couples both working at the company could see combined bonuses exceeding 1 billion won next year.
  • The company's work jackets are being sold on secondhand platforms for 40,000 won (about $30), advertised as "the ultimate dating armor." The listings quickly rack up thousands of views. Even SNL Korea got in on the act, airing a skit where a luxury boutique assistant snubs a plain-dressed customer — until spotting the SK Hynix logo and instantly switching to fawning mode, calling her "Lord Hynix."
  • But there's a downside: since bonuses are tied to attendance, parental leave is seen as a loss of income. Male parental leave usage dropped from 2.8% in 2023 to 2% in 2025. On Blind, one employee posted that if his wife takes two years of child care leave, the family would forfeit roughly 300 million won in bonuses — a dilemma many couples are grappling with.

SK Hynix overhauled its bonus system last September, removing the previous 1000% cap and replacing it with a fixed 10% of operating profit for the next decade. The ripple effect has already reached Samsung Electronics: their union is now demanding bonuses of 15% of operating profit, a request Samsung's president called "excessive."
