OpenAI merges ChatGPT and Codex teams, Brockman takes product reins

OpenAI is shaking up its executive ranks, folding its ChatGPT, AI coding agent Codex, and developer API groups into a single core product team.

President and co-founder Greg Brockman is officially taking over the company’s product strategy, while continuing to oversee AI infrastructure. He had been filling the role temporarily while Fidji Simo, head of AGI deployment, was on medical leave. In an internal memo, Brockman said the product lines are “naturally converging” and the reorganization is meant to focus resources on agents.

The reshuffle also involves several key leadership changes:

  • Thibault Sottiaux, formerly head of Codex, is being promoted to lead the core product and platform team. He’s currently working on a “super app” that would combine Codex, ChatGPT, and the Atlas browser into a unified desktop experience.
  • Nick Turley, who led ChatGPT past 900 million weekly active users, is moving to enterprise product lead, exiting consumer products entirely.
  • Ashley Alexander, a former Instagram VP, is taking over the consumer product division.

The consolidation is aimed at sharpening OpenAI’s focus as it faces mounting competition from Anthropic in coding, and as it prepares for a potential IPO later this year.
