The Trump administration is planning a May 14–15 trip to China, and the White House has reportedly invited the CEOs of Apple, Nvidia, Boeing, and other major companies to tag along, according to Semafor. But Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC on Thursday he hasn't received a formal invitation — though he'd be "deeply honored" to attend. Blackstone and Citigroup's chiefs have already confirmed they're in.
This trip's main goal is to extend the trade truce the two countries' leaders reached last October. Potential business wins include China buying 500 Boeing MAX jets and American soybeans; a proposal to let Chinese automakers build factories in the US, however, appears to be dead in the water.
AI is also on the agenda. The Wall Street Journal reports that the US and China are discussing launching an AI safety dialogue. Huang himself publicly called last month for more collaboration between American and Chinese AI researchers, citing Anthropic's Mythos model's "extraordinary network capabilities." Separately, the US is mulling a new intergovernmental trade and investment committee to manage two-way flows of non-sensitive goods.
