Microsoft AI has introduced MAI-Image-2.6-Flash, a faster, cheaper spin on the flagship MAI-Image-2.6 model, and it's now in public preview on Microsoft Foundry. The Flash version keeps the same core feature set — text-to-image generation, image editing, multi-image reference, live web retrieval for current info, and automatic aspect-ratio selection — but it's built to push latency and cost down.
Speed is the big sell. Microsoft says MAI-Image-2.6-Flash generates images 2.8x faster than GPT-Image-2 Medium while delivering 72% higher GPU efficiency.
But this isn't just a straight-up quality-for-speed trade. On Artificial Analysis's current image-editing leaderboard, MAI-Image-2.6-Flash sits third with a 1311 Elo rating, a hair above GPT Image 2 high's 1309. In text-to-image, it ranks eighth with 1297 Elo. The flagship MAI-Image-2.6 still performs better — it currently leads image editing and takes second in text-to-image.
Then there's pricing. Microsoft Foundry lists MAI-Image-2.6-Flash at $19 per million output tokens for image generation, while the flagship 2.6 is $38 per million tokens. Artificial Analysis's representative-image math puts that at roughly $19.50 per 1,000 images — or about $211 per 1,000 for GPT Image 2 high.
