Meet Instinct's 23-Year-Old Founder: Reflexion Author and Sierra Alum

August 27, 2026 | Source: t | AI | 276 views 0 comments

Noah Shinn is 23. He's also the founder of Instinct, a personal AI assistant now valued at $2.5 billion. The Wall Street Journal says he dropped out of Northeastern University in 2023, but only after doing machine learning and programming language research at Northeastern and MIT.

Shinn's biggest claim to fame in AI research is Reflexion. As first author of the NeurIPS 2023 paper, he proposed having an agent summarize its errors after a failure, turn them into memory, and apply them in the following round. That paper delivered 91% pass@1 on HumanEval, beating the 80% GPT-4 result it reported.

He later helped build τ-bench, an evaluation for agents that checks whether a model can talk with users, call tools, follow business rules, and stay consistent over multiple runs. Then he joined enterprise AI agent company Sierra as an early employee and research scientist.

That path points neatly to today's Instinct: reflection, tool use, real-world task evaluation, enterprise agents — and now, a personal agent of his own.

After Instinct was announced, Sarah Guo (Conviction), Brad Gerstner (Altimeter), and Andrey Styskin (formerly head of Yandex search, AI, and cloud) congratulated Shinn in the comments.
