Google is reshuffling its AI leadership. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO to become chairman of Google DeepMind, as well as chief scientist at Google's parent company Alphabet. In that role, he'll oversee the company's long-term AI research direction while continuing to lead the AI drug discovery company Isomorphic Labs.

DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over day-to-day operations. Google hasn't named a new CEO yet.

At the same time, former Alphabet chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving the company along with Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to start a new AI research company called Discovery Loop. Alphabet plans to invest in the startup and give it access to Google Cloud resources.
