Shares of Chinese AI unicorns Zhipu and MiniMax-W skyrocketed today after the Hang Seng Tech Index announced they would be joining the index. The Hang Seng Indexes Company also removed Kingdee International and Kingsoft from the index. The changes will be implemented after the market close on June 5 and take effect on June 8.
Zhipu and MiniMax are leading generative AI unicorns in China. Both companies went public in January 2026 under the Hong Kong Stock Exchange's Chapter 18C rules for specialist technology companies.
Market anticipation of the inclusion had already boosted the stocks ahead of the official announcement after the close on May 22. By the end of trading, Zhipu (02513.HK) surged 26.93% to HK$1,282.00, while MiniMax-W (00100.HK) jumped 15.91% to HK$768.50. Both companies have been listed for less than six months, underscoring strong investor appetite for large language model companies. The index addition also makes them eligible for the Stock Connect program, potentially attracting southbound funds from mainland China.
