The carbon removal buying coalition Frontier announced Wednesday that it has secured an additional $915 million in commitments and added generative AI startup Anthropic as a new member. The injection brings the group's total pledged funds to $1.8 billion. Frontier's model is simple: prepurchase carbon removal credits to lower the commercialization risk for early-stage projects and help them scale faster.
The new money will focus on four emerging technologies: ocean alkalinity enhancement, biomass-based carbon removal, enhanced rock weathering, and direct air capture. Frontier plans to make 10 to 15 concentrated bets through 8- to 10-year offtake contracts (some extending to 2040). While each approach comes with its own cost and technical uncertainties, the coalition believes they collectively have the potential to reach gigaton-scale carbon removal.
Frontier was founded in 2022 by Stripe, Google, Meta, and Shopify, with Salesforce also among its existing members.
