Google is shaking up its AI leadership, and the moves are big. Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, is stepping down to become Alphabet's chief scientist — a role that puts him in charge of the parent company's long-term AI research direction. At the same time, Jeff Dean is leaving Google to found a startup.
Hassabis will also stay on as chairman of Google DeepMind and continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI-powered drug discovery company. Meanwhile, Google DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over the team's day-to-day operations. Google hasn't yet named a replacement for Hassabis's CEO role.
