Codex hits 6 million users, OpenAI drops its 5-hour limit

OpenAI’s core product lead Tibo announced that Codex and ChatGPT Work have collectively hit 6 million weekly active users. To keep up with demand, Codex is temporarily removing the 5-hour usage cap on its Plus, Business, and Pro plans and resetting everyone’s quota once.

OpenAI is also adjusting the usage calculation for GPT-5.6 Sol. The new version will reduce the amount of quota consumed by similar tasks, though the exact reduction hasn’t been shared. For heavy users, these two changes mean they can work longer in a single session.

Codex’s user growth is accelerating. Axios reported in early June that weekly active users had just topped 5 million — a more than sixfold increase since the desktop version launched in February. A month later, the official count has jumped to 6 million.
