Anthropic just rebuilt the streaming renderer behind Claude's web and desktop apps — the frontend module that paints model-generated text onto your screen as it arrives. The company says long replies are now about 4x smoother, with stutter reduced by roughly 9x on slower computers, and the worst-case freeze shortened by about 4.5x.
Instead of redrawing the entire reply on every update, the new renderer only refreshes the content that's actively changing. In Anthropic's demo, a 120Hz MacBook held a steady 120fps from the first token to the last.
Claude's long-conversation lag isn't exactly new. Back in 2024, users reported that copying, typing, and scrolling could stall for seconds after lengthy chats; as recently as May, desktop users were still complaining about ~5-second input delays.
