WeChat's new AI assistant 'Xiao Wei' can build mini-programs with a single sentence

WeChat is quietly rolling out a native AI assistant called "Xiao Wei" (literally "Little Wei") to a small slice of users, tucked into the top-left corner of the main interface. The assistant lets you control WeChat's built-in features and summon mini-programs using text or voice commands. Early testers report that Xiao Wei can generate a playable music playlist from a conversation, whip up a custom widget with charts and buttons in a single sentence, or summarize a group chat.
Tencent's customer service confirmed that Xiao Wei is an early internal test by the WeChat team. The underlying model is powered primarily by Tencent's own WeLM large language model, with DeepSeek providing fallback responses for some queries.
Functionally, Xiao Wei is deeply integrated into the WeChat ecosystem. You can drop a PDF into the chat, and the assistant returns a structured summary along with its reasoning. Ask for a reminder in five minutes, and it creates a to-do right in the conversation. Type a request for a mini-tool, and within seconds Xiao Wei produces a widget with pages, buttons, and charts — though for now those widgets are for personal use only and cannot be shared.
Unlike standalone third-party AI assistants, Xiao Wei lives inside WeChat's native UI, directly connected to your contacts, official accounts, video accounts, files, and WeChat Pay.
The assistant is still in gray-scale testing, with some rough edges, and Tencent hasn't announced a wider launch timeline.
